Thank you very much Michael, I am sorry that I don't have deep pockets yet, I hope some day will be. I do know some lawyers, I don't think they know about the PI business.

Nina,
I am sorry that I cannot give the detailed advice that you need, but I hope that I can keep you from getting in over your head.
thank you anyway Michael, you have been join IPIU about four years, sound you doing very will, are you a own agency yourself?
Nina,
I did not have deep pockets then or now. I do keep in touch with associates in the security world - police, PIs, consultants, et al.
I understand, good for you, I wish you good luck.
Answer: No.
See Sections 9 of the statutes as Revised, #1-3.
The statutes pertain to advertising as a "Private" investigator, not a criminal defense investigator.
Your business card could very easily read:
(name)
Private Investigator
Law Offices of (name of attorney)
Address of attorney
(cell phone)
That is a mistake. The better answer would be "I work under the license of (name of attorney) as a private investigator".
Hand him a copy of Post #1 of this topic where all of the exemptions for private investigator licensing are listed for New Jersey. Most cops never read the statutes. They just get handed their PI License and think that everyone else has to be a cop too.
The unregulated portions of a investigating are also noted in the statutes. No one needs a PI license to pull public civil and criminal records, but that is what licensed PI's do as well as unlicensed PI's, case examiners, and others do.
Yes. But you should carry a copy of the statutes with you for dummies who may ask you otherwise.
A criminal defense investigator is not advertising as a private investigator. The titles are different.
You could use the official IPIU recommended title of Case Examiner.

Brandi,
How is the thought of joining us progressing?
I will tell you know that NJ is one of the hardest states to get licensed in.
I have many years to go before I am even qualified to apply.
However joining here will help you in the education area of the profession and you can get an office open in other states before NJ will even look at you.
I can not tell you to join as that is a personal decision but I have not regreted joining just for the education and chance to earn money as a trainee.
Good luck no maater what you decide.
Bob
I would like to start an LLC company because I have several good contacts and know people that would give me work. I don't have a NJ PI license, but have years of PI and Proces Serving experience. Basically, is it legal for me to start this business and not be licensed in NJ and NY? I may do mostly matrimonial and serves for my company.
i have the experience needed i filled out the application and i got my finger prints . I am LUCKY to be out of state applicant . I asked how long it takes and they said 6-8 month . You guys might want to find jobs in the mean time .

Hi Julia,
I see your from NJ. Can I ask where? I'm a new member to IPIU and from Jersey as well. I see you've been a member for a while now. Do you know if there is a IPIU charter group in NJ?
I recommend getting an out of state license waiting 5 years and asking if your out of state 5 year license counts as experience .
For the experience rating, that would work. Most states only require 3 years full time experience.
Or, members of the International Private Investigators Union can upgrade their annual membership to a Lifetime Corporate Plan, and get a licensed private investigatior in their home state to sponsor them. The sponsorship program takes approximately 3-4 weeks for pre-approval of their state licenses. They can call IPIU at 406-534-0251 for details.
Sincerely,
Ann Marie Ryan

and administration what is the procedure and can u help get me licensed and do i need a sponsor and if i do can u sponsor me
This is the scoop: 5yrs. as a police officer, work for a private investigation firm and use their ID number till the time has been be a accumulated, which is ten thousand hrs. which is your qualifier. Then your app. will be sent in for board approval.

Rajohn, if you do not have the "earned hours" to qualify for your personal NJ PI License, then you can use your Colorado corporation to upgrade to a Lifetime Corporate Member, and ask IPIU to acquire a sponsor for you in NJ. A Lifetime Corporate Membership requires a c-corporation (which you have) as well as an upgrade in onetime dues. Once upgraded, you never have to worry about membership dues and your PI Union License will be renewed each time for free. To follow up, use the CONTACT US link at the bottom of this page, or call the office at 406-534-0251

This was an old thread. Can anyone share updates to obtain a license in NJ.
5yrs. of on the police force, work for attorney in a law frim, or a private invesigtor toll 10,000 hrs. or have been in the military as an M.P.
Go to Page 1 of this topic and review Post #1. All of the links to the NJ PI licensing details are still good, the statutes are still the same. And you can verify how many hours or years they require. Most regulated states start at three or more years.
